Position overview
Vilnius University seeks for a visionary leader for the position of Director of the Center for Nuclear and Particle Physics. The Center is a research unit with a sui generis status at the Faculty of Physics tasked with developing the experimental elementary particle physics in Lithuania in collaboration with CERN and receiving dedicated state funding for this purpose. The Center belongs to the interinstitutional Lithuanian Consortium for Particle Physics, which coordinates and fosters collaboration between the Lithuanian researchers and CERN.

Description of Functions and Responsibilities:

The Director is the leader and representative of the Center, responsible for shaping the strategic directions, performing the research and managing the scientific infrastructure of the Center. Maintaining and enhancing the relationships with CERN and aligning the Center operations with the objectives of both CERN and the Consortium are the critical aspects of the Director responsibilities. Centers current key task is the establishment of the Pixel Laboratory dedicated to the quality control and involvement in the production of pixel detectors for the CMS experiment. The Director is also expected to facilitate high-impact scientific publications, acquire additional national and international funding through research grants and contracts, and provide supervision of PhD and other students. Teaching on particle and high energy physics at the Faculty of Physics is also included in the responsibilities. The Director manages the Center finances ensuring their efficient and transparent use in compliance with the University procedures and standards. Ensuring the optimal working conditions and safety for the Center staff is also Directors responsibility.

Qualifications:

Doctorate in Physics.
Proven experience and established connections with CERN.
Ability to teach bachelor, master, and PhD level courses.
Proficiency in English.

Preference:

Experience in establishing and managing experimental research laboratories, as well as experience in leading the international scientific teams and other management experience will be considered as an advantage.

Selection Process:

The selection on the base of application documents and, when necessary, interviews will be performed by an international panel appointed by the Rector of Vilnius University. The decision will be announced within 30 calendar days after the deadline for application submission.

Contract Duration: 5 years
Employment Type: Full-time
Salary: 5600-6500 EUR monthly (pre-tax)
