Lead Software Engineer

UAB Astrolight

About the position

Astrolight - a company developing high throughput and very secure wireless laser communication systems for aerospace industry - is looking for an experienced software engineer to lead the company's software development team. You will work together with a team of embedded software and FPGA developers as well as mechanical and electronics engineers to design, develop and test software used for high speed data transmission between a satellite or an unmanned aerial vehicle and a ground station using free space laser based data links. Together with our team you will help us to implement our vision of high throughput, low latency and secure laser communications backhaul for low Earth orbit and beyond.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include leading the software development efforts aimed at tracking fast moving objects, transforming and encoding the input data for transmission via the optical link and controlling the transmitter subsystem. We will expect you to design an appropriate software architecture for a given task, select the required technology for implementing the architecture and work with your team and contractors to deliver a functioning product. The technologies we use include multi-core ARM CPUs running Linux (C, Python), hardware accelerated image and signal processing, FPGAs (VHDL), innovative high speed image sensors and various high speed and high accuracy opto-mechanical actuators.

Prerequisites

The ideal candidate is expected to have experience writing code that interfaces closely with the hardware using a low-level programming language such as C, as well as be familiar with high abstraction level software development using languages such as Python or C#. Willingness to lead the implementation and use of modern coding practices is important to us.
Candidates familiar or who want to familiarize themselves with basic control theory concepts such as PID control and embedded software development (anything from an Arduino to STM32 or even DSPs) are preferred.
